"Welcome to Forks, and the REST of the Olympic Peninsula!" You can't blame the town for adding this to their website after Twilight. There's even a "Twilight" page directing you to all sorts of haunts (sorry, I couldn't resist), and a "'Guy's List' of fun things to do that aren't Twilight related". Yes, a bit sexist. But what really tickles my funny bone? Forks is a logging town.
Is this why Edward and Jacob look like loggers? The vampires I grew up with wore crimson robes with coiffed hair. None of this disheveled I-just-popped-up-from-my-coffin look. You're immortal, I think you can spare five minutes to tidy up. I can't knock though when I haven't read the series. Once I learned that my teenage sister was rooting for Team Edward, I knew I had better things to digest, like my Pacific Northwest guidebook for instance. That's how I ended up in Forks, to see the rest of the Olympic Peninsula.

Gorgeous, no? Rugged is typically used to describe Washington's beaches, but I think raw is more fitting. Raw like your first love. The shore is an onslaught for your senses, almost a cacophony. Gusts of wind lifts sand in your eyes all the while they're transfixed on the setting sun. Waves break like shards, yet you're lulled to sleep on driftwood warmed by the afternoon sun. This too will be your fate if you hike 18 miles in the Hoh Rainforest* the previous day. Ours wasn't an intentional feat. After the seventh mile we just decided to test our mortality. And who could blame us in Bella's backyard?

* It really is, we just hiked the one day out of the year it didn't rain -- not surprised.

Four anchors, and I'm being generous. If it wasn't for Twilight, the town may need to rename itself for it felt like a dying end. But some of my favourite pictures of Washington were taken on the Olympic Peninsula.
