New Cannan, CT

The best practical thing about living in a city is not having to worry about designated drivers. The worst (okay, not THE worst), is that you wake up craving chlorophyll in every which way and form because you didn't drink enough water before spinning towards sleep. New Cannan's residents have it got it good. Living an hour away from New York City by train, they can get sloshed in the city, then recuperate with a green smoothie on their green lawn the following morning. Though those days might be a hazy memory when most move here to settle down.

Marrakech, Morocco

You know that person you connect with right away, but fifteen minutes into your conversation you realize you're cringing (and hoping with all your might that they don't notice) because they want to be your new best friend from that moment on until forever (forever ever??) To me, Marrakech is that person. It's like someone took its 1001 Arabian Nights factor and multiplied it by two. Wait, let's change that two to X because who knows what the number is to implement King Mohammed VI's plan to increase the number of tourists visiting Morocco annually to 20 million by 2020. 20 million?! Okay, Wikipedia isn't always correct, though his "Vision 2020" proposal is aggressive. Given our "conversations" with the disgruntled souk merchants however, I wonder if it's not aggressive enough.

Marfa, TX

Marfa, Marfa, Marfa!

Oh, I tried. I really did, but I couldn't resist the predictable play on words because I felt exactly like Jan after my two days in Marfa. Which is crazy since I was once considering a blind move here. See the space between these two brackets < > ? That's how close I was. So to begin this post with an overused lament years later just doesn't seem right. Sadly, though, it is. I mean, this picture says it all. The woman in pink was not shielding her eyes from the setting sun, she was shielding her profile from my dinky camera.

As someone who prefers to keep their soul, I get it. In my early teens, I would ruin nearly every family portrait by sticking my hand in front of my face on "cheese". I of all people cannot be critical of her gesture, but couldn't she have turned around or stepped aside? I don't know, maybe she's a celebrity and is fed up with the paparazzi. But you're wearing hot pink at an artist's reception in a gallery that premises photography...
