Marrakech, Morocco

You know that person you connect with right away, but fifteen minutes into your conversation you realize you're cringing (and hoping with all your might that they don't notice) because they want to be your new best friend from that moment on until forever (forever ever??) To me, Marrakech is that person. It's like someone took its 1001 Arabian Nights factor and multiplied it by two. Wait, let's change that two to X because who knows what the number is to implement King Mohammed VI's plan to increase the number of tourists visiting Morocco annually to 20 million by 2020. 20 million?! Okay, Wikipedia isn't always correct, though his "Vision 2020" proposal is aggressive. Given our "conversations" with the disgruntled souk merchants however, I wonder if it's not aggressive enough.

The one thing that wasn't lost in translation was their bitterness. They were pissed how my friend and I weren't typically American and living it up. And then to bear it in the confines of a cab -- praying your cabbie doesn't go mental on you -- plus coming home to it -- maybe it was that time of the month for our proprietress?? -- something was indeed amiss.

Why bark at two budget travellers when Marrakesh has the fortune of year-long tourism thanks to its glorious climate? Moreover, tourism is supposed to be increasing at an exponential rate, so where are the profits going? Certainly not in the pockets of the people who interact with tourists on a daily basis. We were flustered by their brashness but in hindsight I sympathize. Would you be hospitable to tourists under such irony? It's unfortunate really because if you lift the Aladdin veil, Marrakech is beautiful. I had forgotten how so, bitterness is an astringent.

3 anchors, we went to other cities in Morocco and the residents were nowhere near as jaundiced as they were here. And I doubt it was due to the towering cone of turmeric in the photo above. Marrakech is also like that person we all know, gorgeous but shitty personality.
