The best practical thing about living in a city is not having to worry about designated drivers. The worst (okay, not THE worst), is that you wake up craving chlorophyll in every which way and form because you didn't drink enough water before spinning towards sleep. New Cannan's residents have it got it good. Living an hour away from New York City by train, they can get sloshed in the city, then recuperate with a green smoothie on their green lawn the following morning. Though those days might be a hazy memory when most move here to settle down.
But I didn't visit to check out real estate, and I doubt I ever would because you need to crave another green* first. The kind that helps you buy a plot of land to build a
glass house on. (Cause you know, everyone in America has a wooden home already.)
Our tour guide, blonde, blue eyes, Lily Pulitzer model looks, studied art history in New York City now works for a mid-century house museum, broke character for 5 minutes. "Brownie girl moment -- if you step here your voice echoes in this invisible vacuum because of the circular walls. What can I say..." Next thing I knew 10 adults were giddy without alcohol. For the remainder of the tour I couldn't stop thinking about her wholesome sense of play. Did her's typify New Cannan, or the notorious key party in the film
The Ice Storm? When she pointed out the yellow crest of a school bus, barely visible above the stone boundary wall, the wind picked up just as it started to rain...
* Well, once it was only green, now it has hints of mauve and lavender. Prettier, but this is something else.

Three anchors, for three very good reasons: 1) I don't crave Mr. Johnson's kind of green, 2) the town seemed lovely, almost too lovely, and 3) it's 10 mins away from Chole Sevigny's hometown, "Aryan Darien" -- hells. no.
